Chromatography is a separation technology, where the mixture of compounds distributed between two immiscible phases - one is stationary and another is mobile. 

If the mobile phase is liquid it is known as Liquid Chromatography (e.g., HPLC, IC).

If the mobile phase is gas, it is known as Gas Chromatography.

Chromatography technique use to separate compounds from a mixture in any forms  (Solid, liquid or gas). It can be used for organic and inorganic compounds.

Liquid chromatography used for organic compounds using HPLC. For inorganic compounds, IC used to detect the anions and cations.

Gas chromatograph use for organic compounds (in any state of matters) and for inorganic gases.

Chromatography technique is using in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, petrochemical, environment and many more industries wherever the interest is to detect and quantify the organic molecules.
